Across 71 studies and 98,299 participants, higher short-form video use was associated with poorer cognition (r = −.34) — especially attention (r = −.38) and inhibitory control (r = −.41) — and poorer mental health (r = −.21), strongest for stress and anxiety. Patterns held for youth and adults, and across platforms.
Límites
These are associations, not proof of causation. Many included studies are cross-sectional and self-report. Effects were stronger for addiction-style measures than for raw time spent. The review found no reliable link with body image or self-esteem.

People scoring higher on short-video addiction measures showed structural differences in the orbitofrontal cortex — a region that assigns reward value — and altered function in dorsolateral prefrontal areas used for stopping.
Límites
Imaging samples are small. Brain differences can be cause, consequence, or both. This does not mean the brain is “damaged” in a clinical sense.

In an EEG study (n = 48), higher short-video addiction scores correlated with weaker prefrontal theta power during executive-control tasks (r = −.395) and with lower self-control (r = −.320). Theta in this range is a signature of sustained attention and impulse regulation.
Límites
Small sample, correlational design. Participants could still “pass” behavioral tests while EEG already looked weaker — which is a warning, not a diagnosis.

Fifty-seven people watched either one continuous long video or many short videos matched for duration and content. The short-video group recalled less. fMRI showed reduced activity in regions involved in integration, cognitive control, and semantic processing, and weaker connectivity between them.
Límites
Lab task, not a lifetime of scrolling. Still one of the few studies that holds content and time constant and varies only fragmentation.

Límites
