Feeds, feelings, and focus: A systematic review and meta-analysis examining the cognitive and mental health correlates of short-form video use

Nguyen, L., Walters, J., Paul, S., Monreal Ijurco, S., Rainey, G. E., Parekh, N., Blair, G., & Darrah, M.

Psychological Bulletin

DOI 10.1037/bul0000498

Apa yang ditambahkannya

Across 71 studies and 98,299 participants, higher short-form video use was associated with poorer cognition (r = −.34) — especially attention (r = −.38) and inhibitory control (r = −.41) — and poorer mental health (r = −.21), strongest for stress and anxiety. Patterns held for youth and adults, and across platforms.

Batasan

These are associations, not proof of causation. Many included studies are cross-sectional and self-report. Effects were stronger for addiction-style measures than for raw time spent. The review found no reliable link with body image or self-esteem.

Neuroimaging correlates of short-video addiction: orbitofrontal structure and executive-control function

Gao, Y., et al.

NeuroImage

Apa yang ditambahkannya

People scoring higher on short-video addiction measures showed structural differences in the orbitofrontal cortex — a region that assigns reward value — and altered function in dorsolateral prefrontal areas used for stopping.

Batasan

Imaging samples are small. Brain differences can be cause, consequence, or both. This does not mean the brain is “damaged” in a clinical sense.

Short-video addiction, prefrontal theta power, and self-control during executive tasks

Yan, H., et al.

Frontiers in Human Neuroscience

Apa yang ditambahkannya

In an EEG study (n = 48), higher short-video addiction scores correlated with weaker prefrontal theta power during executive-control tasks (r = −.395) and with lower self-control (r = −.320). Theta in this range is a signature of sustained attention and impulse regulation.

Batasan

Small sample, correlational design. Participants could still “pass” behavioral tests while EEG already looked weaker — which is a warning, not a diagnosis.

Fragmented learning from short videos modulates neural activity and connectivity during memory retrieval

Science of Learning authors

Apa yang ditambahkannya

Fifty-seven people watched either one continuous long video or many short videos matched for duration and content. The short-video group recalled less. fMRI showed reduced activity in regions involved in integration, cognitive control, and semantic processing, and weaker connectivity between them.

Batasan

Lab task, not a lifetime of scrolling. Still one of the few studies that holds content and time constant and varies only fragmentation.

Oxford Word of the Year 2024: brain rot

Oxford University Press

Oxford Languages

https://languages.oup.com/word-of-the-year/2024/

Apa yang ditambahkannya

Oxford named “brain rot” the 2024 Word of the Year: the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state from overconsuming trivial or unchallenging online content — especially short-form feeds.

Batasan

A cultural label, not a medical diagnosis. The research above is what makes the slang worth taking seriously.
